On this week's show...

It's a good one, friends.

Top of the list has to be the Chris Wood guest DJ set. His band, Medeski, Martin & Wood, is in town Friday night for a show at the Calvin, and he put together a terrific set of music he and his family like to listen to together.

We've also got brand-spanking-new music from Melissa Errico and Richard Julian, plus a fun song from Vampire Weekend, and lots of old favorites.

Be sure to listen!

Also, we're heading to the Dan Zanes show at UMass tomorrow night -- anyone else who's going, send me a note and perhaps we can meet up at the pre-party hosted by the folks at Family Fun.

I don't mean to get ahead of myself

...but I think I love this record.

Listen in particular to "Daisy." I think that's a favorite song of the year already, and I've listened to it a grand total of one and a half times.

The Shinyribs tune is pretty great too. (Shinyribs = side project of Kevin Russell of the Gourds.)

Am I wrong?

What do these people have in common?

Geddy Lee
Harland Williams
Lyle Lovett
Sarah McLachlan
Martin Tielli (from the Rheostatics)
David Suzuki
Jason Preistley
Gord Downie (from The Tragically Hip)
Bubbles (from The Trailer Park Boys - aka Mike Smith)
"Weird" Al Yankovic
Janeane Garofalo
Gordon Lightfoot

Give up?

They all appear, sharing their favorite snack food, on Barenaked Ladies' utterly addictive new kids' record Snacktime. We can't play tracks from it quite yet, but I promise you'll dig it.

Geddy Lee? Loves barbecue potato chips. And Janeane Garofalo? Microwaved chocolate donuts.

Did I mention this? Probably not.

So we're going to go see They Might Be Giants in Portsmouth* next month -- one kids' show, one grown-ups' show. Between them? We're going to do another interview with at least the Johns.

Miss the one last year? Listen here.

* When we recorded this week's show for the River, we had a discussion between songs about pronouncing Portsmouth, as it's the name of a song Ella played at a violin recital on Sunday. Unfortunately, I screwed up and had to go back and re-record that song ID. So you'll never hear it. Alas.

Double Rawking This Week

This week we'll actually have different shows on the two stations.

On The River, we'll have a super fun show we recorded yesterday, with a lot of old favorites plus some new music (including an awesome song by Tim Burgess, formerly of Charlatans).

On VFR, we'll have a guest show from Princess Katie & Racer Steve.

Both will be available for on-demand streaming here later in the week.

Also: The Muppets won the Grammy for best children's artist. Huh.

We're on.

Just heard today that we will in fact start on The River this Saturday from 7 to 9 in the morning -- real promotion will start next week, but I guess they figured we had a show together, so why not air it?

They do stream the station, though it's got some quirks -- I think they drop in some national ads instead of local ones sometimes, and then there are long periods where it's just instrumental music. I don't think those preempt any actual programming.

Uncle Rock on AM

I didn't realize this until afterwards, but Uncle Rock appeared last Friday on the morning show on WHMP, which I guess we can now term our sister station, since it's broadcast from the same studios as The River.

You can get directly to the MP3 of the interview -- which is a lot of fun -- here.

2008-02-09 Playlist

So it's not totally sure if this show will air on the River this week or not -- it's ready and it's good (if I do say so myself), but they're thinking about waiting one week just so they can promote the launch -- they haven't gotten the promo bits recorded, etc., yet. It will air on VFR and you can stream it here:

Every eighteen minutes or so (i.e., after each segment below), imagine that there's an ad or PSA break. Yes, we will talk more on future episodes; I was just focused on keeping my finger on the CD player and making everything work, so we didn't chat as much as usual. But we will talk more.

I voted.

Indulge a little off-topic conversation, won't you?

The historic nature of the vote hit me more than expected in the booth.

My mom (the kids' grandmother) was an organizer for NOW in Oklahoma, trying (ultimately in vain) to get that state to pass the ERA. When I was about Ella's age, I dressed up in old-fashioned clothes (those clothes are still in the kids' dress-up supplies) and would go to meetings of the local feminist group and such, and read -- satirically -- a (real) letter to the editor, written early in the 20th century by a young boy, explaining why women should not get the right to vote. The reasons ("too emotional," "weaker brains," that sort of thing) echoed many of the reasons for why people opposed the ERA, and, not incidentally, reasons occasionally muttered as to why Senator Clinton can't be president.

My maternal grandparents had crosses burned in their yard in Arkansas for having an African-American foster child. Didn't change what they did at all. And it wasn't that long ago. Liam's middle name is Gordon after that grandfather (who is still alive); Ella's middle name is Alma after that grandmother (who died eleven years ago).

It's a remarkable day and a remarkable election season. No doubt it affects many people more directly than it does me. But there's some genuine amazement to be part of this, isn't there?

New York People: Go To This.

Stefan notes what might be the coolest kids' show at least this week -- The Hold Steady's Tad Kubler playing a show for kids. Kubler's a dad and says he's wanting to do more stuff like this -- and says he'll come on the show next time they come through Northampton. Should be fun! If anyone goes, report, please.

Schedule change...

We're postponing Chris Wood's guest DJ set a bit, so that we can include it on the new station. It'll be very soon -- next few weeks, probably before Medeski Martin & Wood's local (non-kids) show...

The weekend...

We shall never speak of yesterday evening's football game again. Okay?

In other parts of the weekend:

The Uncle Rock show Saturday morning was terrific. 100 people there -- that's two weeks in a row with 100+ attendees! -- and a great show. Later in the day, we went to the new station and recorded three songs with him, including one non-album track.

Saturday was Neko Case. As I mentioned before, we were lucky enough to get front row seats. So we were this close to her and Kelly Hogan, who is evidently touring with her:

Man, they can sing. Wonderful show.

Then Sunday after church we went to the new station again and recorded our first show there. I think it went well -- you'll hear it Saturday, I believe -- but we were all a little nervous, too. But some great music and lots of fun, too.

Mates of State like Frances England

Check it out.

Elsewhere on the blog, they report that they've finished their new album. Hopefully that means they'll think about the kids' record they mentioned when they came through town a few months ago.

Oh, and of course more importantly, welcome to Junebug.

The Big News...

Starting on either February 9 or February 16, we're going to be on local station The River, from 7 to 9 in the morning on Saturday mornings. We'll still (at least for now) be on Valley Free Radio as well, from 8 to 10, with the same show (sans ads).

The River is a great station in the format generally known as "AAA" ("Adult Album Alternative"), though I think they're significantly more eclectic than average for that format. They play a good amount of local music, support local merchants, and generally seem like friendly folks. The studios they have a super modern, as you might expect, and so we can hopefully do a better job sound-wise with visiting musicians.

They haven't asked us to do anything significantly different, except that there will be ads. But I think it'll be well worth it, given the fact that we're going from a station with about a ten-mile broadcast radius to one that broadcasts from Vermont to Connecticut, with all of western Massachusetts in the middle (check out the signal map!).

As you might have guessed from the schedule, we will be pre-recording the show now, though we'll be doing it "live to tape" (well, live to digital audio), so hopefully it won't sound pre-recorded. We're doing one test run this weekend, and if it comes out well, they'll air it next Saturday; if not, we'll be on the following week.

Whee!

Oh, and also, what do you think of the new tag line up top there? "Indie music for indie kids." You like?

Knitted Johns: Funny.

Are you subscribing to the They Might Be Giants Friday Night Family Podcast? You should. Today's entry (for One Dozen Monkeys and Flying V) is an absolute hoot. And we're hoping to get the singer -- the young Hannah Levine -- to do an interview with us soon.
